Abstract
214,044. Kempton, E. F. Feb. 27, 1923. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles. -Relates to methods of making shoes of the kind in which an upper is lasted on to an insole of canvas or similar thin light material, cemented at its edge to the insole, and a sole secured by stitches passing through itself, the upper, and the insole, and consists in the employment of a cardboard or other strip laid between the bottom of the last and the insole to serve as a temporary foundation for the purpose of carrying the tacks which hold the sole in position and to maintain the work in shape after removal of the last during the sewing operation, enabling the shoe to be made with an extremely thin or light and flexible insole. A cardboard or like foundation strip 8, Fig. 4, an insole 1 and attached sock 2 are first secured to the last 7 bv tacks 9. The upper is lasted over the insole and secured by tacks 10 and its edge cemented to the insole, a leather or other plate being, if desired, tacked to the last to keep the edges of the upper in close contact with the insole while the cement is drying. When the cement has set, and the plate, if used, has been removed, the tacks, 9, 10 are withdrawn, a filler 13, Fig. 8, applied, and an outer or mid-sole 4 secured by tacks 14. The last is then removed and the shoe stitched, the stiches passing through the sole 4, and the edges of the upper and insole. The tacks 14 and the strip 8 are then removed. If desired, an outer sole may then be applied. For tennis or other shoes when this outer sole is of crepe or other rubber the mid sole 4 is, before attachment, provided with a layer 5 of crepe or other rubber.
