Abstract
217,711. Hughes, Bolckow, & Co., Ltd., and Macgillivray, A. M. April 28, 1923. Blowpipe burners.- An arrangement of fuel and oxygen controls and a nozzle are described for a blow pipe burner having a cutting oxygen jet. The controls comprise, (1) a fuel control 4, Figs. 1 and 2, admitting the fuel gas (e.g. acetylene) to the control chamber 1, and through conduits 18, 17, 42, Fig. 3, to the recess 15 in the junction piece 5; (2) a main control 14 for the supply to the control chamber 1 of the oxygen for the heating mixture, the oxygen entering by the tube 2 and passing through conduits 13, 12 and the anular passage 8; (3) a fine adjustment subsidiary control 9 controlling the supply of oxygen through the passage 8 to the recess 15 where it mixes with the fuel gas; and (4) a control 40 for the cutting jet, the oxygen therefor passing from the supply 2 and conduit 13, through a by-pass passage 22 in the control chamber 1 which passage is not affected by the main oxygen control 14. The junction piece 5 is registered with the control chamber 1 by a pin 27. The heating mixture from the recess 15 passes through a coned passage 20, and then through the tube 19 to the passage 29 and the annular chamber 32 in the elbow 21. The cutting jet control includes a spring released valve 24, and an adjustable screw 43 on the control lever 40. The oxygen for the cutting jet passes through the passages 23, 26, tube 25 to the central passage 28 in the elbow 21 and through the central passage 38 in the nozzle head 34. In the nozzle are two series of baffles formed by a fitting 31 and the nozzle head. The fitting 31 is screwed into the elbow piece 21 and has a series of conical passages 33 extending from the annular chamber 32 to a second annular chamber 36. The nozzle head which is preferably made of copper is attached by a screw sleeve 35 and has tapered passages 39 surrounding the central oxygen passage 38.
