Magnetic instruments; earpieces; diaphragms.-In a telephone receiver which can be inserted in the auricle of the ear, the diaphragm 4, Figs. 1 and 3, is composed of a metal foil having a high natural resiliency, such as phosphorbronze, German silver, nickel or the like, and of a thickness not exceeding 0.05 mm. A disc-like iron armature 6, about thirty times the thickness of the foil, is soldered to the diaphragm along its entire surface, and the diaphragm, while being strongly stretched radially, is soldered at its circumference to a carrier ring 5. A process for producing the diaphragm comprises stretching a sheet of foil 4<1> clamped in an annular holder 16, Fig. 3, by a hollow cylinder 17, while the armature 6 and the carrier ring 5 are attached on opposite sides of the sheet by solder. The carrier 5 is loosely inserted in the telephone casing, and held in position by the magnet 10 being forced towards it by a spring 14, a distance ring 7 being placed between the diaphragm and the magnet. The magnet is pot-shaped with its winding 11 placed in its interior. Its outer pole 12 lies close to the inner rod-like pole 13, so that the armature of the diaphragm has to bridge only a narrow gap.
