Abstract

Lateral-splash guards are mounted on the wheel hub by a bearing 5, the outer ring of which has a universal-joint and telescopic-tube connection 1, 4 with the ordinary mud-guard 2, and supports a socket 9 accommodating a rod 12 carrying the guard 21. When resilient buffers 18 on pivoted hubs 20 are struck by an obstacle the rod 12 is rocked on its axis and feathers 13 become disengaged from notched stoppers 11 in the socket 9 and enter featherways 10, whereupon the rod and guard are moved upwardly by spring 14. The guard 21 of chain mail is stiffened by a wire 22 threaded through the links and is adjustably mounted on the rod 12 by a, bolt 16 and slot 17. In a modification the guard is restrained against rotation by a post loosely engaging a slot in a bracket attached to the vehicle. In a further modification for use with front wheels the socket is held in an eye-bolt, mounted on a non- rotating member passing through the hub cap and attached to the stub axle.
