Ball or roller bearings; spring supports.-In a spinning-machine spindle provided with a dismountable ball-bearing 5 at its mid-length and a spring-mounted step-bearing 9, the parts are so arranged that the movement of the shaft 1 due to the insertion of empty yarn-holders causes the lubricating-oil to rise and lubricate the ball-bearing 5. The inner ring 4 of the bearing is secured to the shaft 1, and the outer ring 6 is mounted in a socket 7 screwed on to the spindle-holder 8. The step-bearing 9 is provided with two apertures 12, a shoulder 13, grooves 15 for the return of the oil, and an annular space 16 for collecting the returning oil. The oil normally reaches to the lower part of the bearing portion 10, but on in. serting an empty yarn-holder and compressing the spring 11 the oil is impelled towards the top. The downward motion of the spindle is limited by the engagement of the shoulders 13, 14, Fig. 2, and the oil is forced up between the shaft 1 and step-bearing tube and thence projected on to the balls 5. As the spring 11 extends, the oil returns through the annular orifice 16 and the grooves 15. In a modification, a metallic washer a, Fig. 3, is secured to the step-bearing tube b so as to divide the apertures c into two parts, the upper part d being very small. An elastic washer e is pressed against the washer a by the spring f. When an empty yarn-holder is placed on the spindle, the spring f is compressed and the oil is driven through the apertures c between the tube b and shaft i to lubricate the balls. The oil returns through grooves along the outer surface of the tube b and through the orifices d to the oil supply.
