Abstract
514,405. Bearings. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 4, 1938, No. 13333. Convention date, May 4, 1937. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group VIII] A vertical shaft 11, oscillated by a rack (not shown) engaging a pinion on the shaft, is mounted in a lower bearing sleeve 14 having axial grooves 50 to prevent "pump ing" of the lubricant past the sleeve due, amongst other factors, to slight tipping and sideways movements of the shaft, shown exaggerated in Fig. 7. The grooves may be in the shaft instead of in the bearing sleeve. Two of the grooves are arranged at diametrically opposite points on the centre line parallel to the reciprocating movement of the rack. and two other grooves are equally spaced therebetween. As an additional precaution the upper ends of the grooves may be sealed by washers 52, Fig. 8, pressed against a bearing 51 by a spring 53 confined between the washers and the upper end of the sleeve 14.
