Abstract

A conversion system comprises a preamplifier 1 and an analog-to-digital converter 22 with an integrating amplifier 11 connected between the preamplifier and the analog-to-digital converter. The integrating time of the integrating amplifier is switchable in steps so that the next highest value is selected if the output signal from the integrating amplifier does not reach a predetermined value during the previous integrating time. The gain of the preamplifier can be made variable in steps so that for a given input the output of the integrator is within a range that can be digitized by the analog-to- digital converter. <IMAGE>
