Systems for continuous-current motors only.- A controller for the generator and motor of a petrol-electric vehicle comprises a reversing and braking switch and a resistance controller mounted in common and provided with magnetic and other locks to ensure correct sequence of operations. In the complete apparatus shown in Fig. 6, a spindle 30 mounted in a casing carries at its lower end segmental contacts 31, 32, 33, 34 of the reversing and braking switch, and can be moved to forward, neutral, reversing, and braking positions by a handle 27 attached to a plate 28 which has positioning notches engaging with a detent 67, Fig. 12. Loose on the upper portion of the spindle 30 is a sleeve 46 carrying drum contact elements 17, 18 which wipe respectively over resistance fingers connected to the field circuits of the generator and motor. The sleeve 46 is operated by a handle 47 and has mechanical interlocks with the handle 27, which ensure that the resistance controller is brought to its zero position before the reversing switch is moved into its forward position, and also limit the amount of resistance that can be inserted in the motor field while the reversing switch occupies its forward position. A magnetic lock engaging notches in a plate 26 further prevents the handle 27 from being moved out of the forward or reverse position while the generator field is excited.
