Tripod stands.-The legs of tripod stands are hinged to each other by balls and sockets mounted on cross-arms attached to each leg, and the parts are clamped together by a device which forms the head upon which the instrument is mounted. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement of the legs, having cups c<1>, c<2> and a ball d. The locking-device consists of two plates b, e, of which the latter is shaped to fit the dished instrument table k. A bolt f screws through the lower plate b, and passes freely through the parts e, k, and an upper washer u. The whole is locked in the adjusted position by turning a handle g which is pivoted on the upper end of the bolt.
