Abstract

187,581. Lafitte, T. Oct. 20, 1921, [Convention date]. Valves; regulating.-A V-cylinder engine with pairs of pistons connected to one crank pin 27 have the crank cases closed to form air pumps, the rotary admission and delivery valves 38, 46* being driven through gearing. The air is delivered to two carburettors, one at each end of the engine. A handadjusted relief valve 43 has ports for connecting adjacent crank cases together and to the atmosphere. As used on aircraft, the relief valve connects the adjacent pump chambers together and to the atmosphere when on the ground. Air is then drawn by engine suction through the crank cases. As. the aircraft rises, the valve is progressively 'shut in order to keep constant the pressure of the air supplied to the carburettors. The admission to the cylinders is controlled by cam-actuated valves 51, the cam shaft being movable axially to enable part of the charge admitted to the cylinders in turn to be returned to the inlet pipe. The controls may be by hand or automatically according to the density of the atmosphere.
