Regulating.-In supercharging-means in which a pump piston b<1> associated with the power piston b furnishes a supercharge of air, for example to a chamber i in valved communication with the cylinder or cylinders, or both the in-stroke and out-stroke of the power piston, the throttle n of the carburettor j is in operative connection with a valve in the air inlet h<2> to the pump, so that the air may be controlled in proportion to the supply of supercharge to the cylinders. As shown, the valves are connected bv arms n<1> and a rod n<2>. Valve gear.-Inlet and exhaust valves f, f<1> for the power cylinders, and inlet valves g, g<1> and exhaust valves g<2>, g<3> for the pump spaces d, d' are actuated by cams driven from the engine shaft m through gearing l<0> - - l<3>; rotary valves may be employed for the pumps in place of beat valves.
