Abstract
649,016. Four-stroke engines. BLEASE, F. R. July 23, 1948, No. 19700. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7(vi)] In addition to the normal inlet and exhaust valves 12, combustible mixture is compressed in the crank case and delivered to the cylinders at the end of the induction stroke through a valve 23. In the twin-cylinder engine shown, tandem pistons 22 force the mixture into the cylinders alternately. The valve 23 is preferably a rotary valve which has passages arranged at right-angles for the two cylinders and rotates at quarter engine speed, the inlet valve 18 rotating at half engine speed. To increase the compression ratio in the crank-case, slotted projections thereon extend into the piston skirts and the fly-wheels have plates attached to their faces, and one or more pump cylinders may be provided to increase the crank-case pressure. Valves may be arranged so that air and mixture may be forced from the crank-case to the cylinders at alternate strokes. The fuel tank may be divided into two parts supplying carburetters 13, 17, respectively, lubricant being added to the supply for the carburetter 17.
