Abstract

1294660 Two-stroke I.C. engines; rotary compressors J H SMITH 5 Dec 1969 [24 Dec 1968] 61242/68 Headings F1B, F1F In an engine having a pair of cylinders 11 and 12, one of which is supplied with air and the other with fuel and air, the cylinder charges are simultaneously compressed into a common combustion space 19 by the respective pistons 16 and 17 which are out of phase except at their dead centres. The cylinders 12 may be supplied with fuel-air mixture by a compressor 25 comprising a hollow shaft 27 carrying an eccentric 29 which rotates in a sleeve 34. Mixture is fed to chambers between the vanes 33 through ports 28, 30 and 32 and delivered to the cylinders 12 through pipes 38 and electric heating devices 41. Air for scavenging may be supplied to a larger diameter cylinder 11 of the engine through a non-return valve by a vane compressor or pump piston 44, Fig. 3 (not shown), coupled to the connecting rod 21 of the piston 16. The pump piston 44 operates in a cylinder 43 arranged at 90 degrees to the pair of combustion cylinders. A valve 39, Fig.1, connecting the cylinder 11 to the exhaust port 40 provides for reduction in charge compression. The cylinder 12 may be supplied with air, and fuel injected under pressure about 120 degrees before T.D.C.
