187,020. Mitchell, J. July 12, 1921. Addition to 168,159. Couplings, automatic. -In the Norwegian hook type of coupling, a modification of the inclined plane described in the parent Specification comprises an inclined plane forming a separate member attached to or inserted in the coupler head, or attached to or integral with the coupling pin or locking bar by maans of which the hook, after the coupling pin has been withdrawn, is automatically raised as the vehicles separate. In Fig. 1 the inclined plane E is attached to the coupler head A at f, F. In Fig. 6 the inclined plane e<1> forms an extension of the coupling pin D and is guided in the coupler head. Two inclined planes e<2>, e<3> at right-angles to the plane e<1> may be used to assist the coupling and uncoupling operations. When inserting the pin D, the incline e<2> raises the hook C and permits easy engagement and when withdrawing the coupling pin D the incline e<3> assists or replaces the action of the plane e<1>.
