Abstract

185,624. Jensen, C. A., (Stone, J. A.). Aug. 27, 1921. Hydrocarbons, cracking. - An apparatus for cracking oils comprises two concentric chambers 1, 2, which are used alternately as cracking - chambers and as heating-chambers, the carbon deposited during cracking being burnt when the chamber is subsequently used for heating. The chambers are packed with catalytic, absorbent, or spreading materials, such as cast iron, nickel, or other metal, porous fire-clay, fire-brick, fuller's earth, &c. The outer chamber 2 is fitted with supporting-shelves 25. Inlet pipes 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 at the bottom of the chambers are covered with protecting hoods 3<1>, and are connected to pipes for supplying respectively oil, steam, combustible gas, and air. Branch pipes 16, 17 serves to supply oil to the middle regions of the chambers. The upper ends of the chambers are connected bv pipes 7, 18 to a four-way cock which connects one chamber to a pipe 21 leading to a condenser while the other chamber is connected to a flue pipe 20. In operation, gas and air are admitted say to the chamber 2 and are burnt therein, the combustion gases passing to the fluepipe 20. Oil is admitted to the chamber 1 and the vapours pass by pipe 21 to a condenser. When the yield of the distillate diminishes or its nature changes, the chamber 2 is used as the cracking-chamber and the chamber 1 as the heating-chamber, excess, of air being supplied so as to burn off the carbon.
