Abstract

208,310. Monnot, J. F. Oct. 27, 1922. Hydrocarbons, cracking. - Hydrocarbon oil, such as fuel oil or crude oil, is cracked by heating the oil under pressure and admitting the heated oil mixed with air to a chamber containing refractory material, such as fireclay, maintained at a high temperature. The cracked product may be conducted directly to the intake manifold of a gas engine or be used for heating or lighting purposes. The oil is forced under a pressure of 50 to 75 lbs. per sq. in. through coiled tubes e. e<1> surrounding a spherical or cylindrical vessel a which is heated to about 500‹ C. by exhaust gases from a gas engine passing through a jacket d or by other means. The heated oil is discharged through a needle valve h into the open end of a pipe k. Oil vapours and air How together over fire cley balls c contained in the chamber a.
