Abstract

Oil gas.-Oil gas is obtained by a process in which water and oil vapours are passed over heated iron filings and over heated iron and charcoal in the apparatus shown. Hydrocarbon oil is heated in a chamber a arranged above gas burners f, which may be supplied with gas formed in the apparatus, and acidulated water, preferably a solution of sulphuric acid, is heated in a chamber b, fitted with a heating coil c which receives steam from a pipe c<1> and discharges into a pipe d connected to a chamber k which exhausts into the atmosphere at k'. The oil and water vapours pass through iron filings h, i arranged on perforated trays with a space between. The vapours then pass through a mass of iron filings and charcoal l heated by burners m, and the gas formed passes through porcelain or like tubes k<2> in the heated chamber k into a chamber n whence the gas is led to a holder p, or to internal-combustion engines q, or r. The burners f, m may be supplied from the holder p.
