Abstract
181,941. Myddelton, R. F. May 25, 1921. Reciprocating sieves.-A sieve for eliminating stalk and the like from tea is provided with raised portions which are perforated. In one form A constructed as shown in Figs. 8, 9<a>, and 9<b>, the sieve is formed with shallow longitudinal grooves r and with raised portions c which are perforated at d. The edges of the perforations d may be turned down, and the grooves r may be omitted. A second form of sieve C, Figs. 6 and 7, is provided with longitudinal furrows formed by plates a, j, and m, as shown in Fig. 7, the plate m being also furrowed transversely, Fig. 6 and provided with holes n at the tops of raised parts between the furrows, and with transverse ridges o at the bottoms of the furrows. The plate j forms a base for the plate m and is provided with large holes k. A third sieve B for use in combination with the sieves A and C is shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 12 and comprises a series of longitudinal furrows f in which are disposed transverse ridges g and holes h facing the ridges as indicated particularly in Fig. 5. The furrows f may be contracted near the holes h as shown in Fig. 12. The tea is first treated on the sieve A, which is inclined and reciprocated, and retains the stalk, midrib, and the largest tea and allows these to fall on to the sieve B, the bulk of the tea passing through and being removed by means of a channel or conveyer. The sieve B which is also inclined and reciprocated, allows the stalks which are not forked and the midribs to pass through and delivers the large tea together with any forked stalks to the sieve C, this operation being facilitated by the construction shown in Fig. 12. The sieve C is reciprocated by hand in the direction of the longitudinal furrows and removes the forked and irregularly shaped stalks from the tea.
