Abstract
Sodium pentaborate is obtained direct from boron ores such as boro natrocalcite by passing the requisite quantity of sulphur dioxide into a mixture of the ore with water. It is preferred to conduct the operation in two stages, sulphur dioxide being passed in excess into a mixture of the ore with water until the boric acid is liberated, and then the supply of sulphur dioxide is stopped and more ore is added, the mixture being heated to effect the reaction.
