Abstract

Hydrazine is prepared by the Raschig reaction characterized in that the stoichiometric amount of ammonia is used to treat dilute alkali metal hypochlorite solution to form chloramine, with cooling and in known manner, and then excess ammonia is forced into the chloramine solution so formed under pressure, up to fifty atmospheres, and with steam at temperatures up to 200 DEG C. to bring the reaction mixture to the optimum reaction temperature for formation of hydrazine extremely rapidly. The ammonia derived from recovery stages in the process may be recycled to the second stage of the process.
