Abstract
162,478. Johnson, P. A. March 2, 1920. Steering-gear.- Steering- gear primarily arranged to be operated by a compressed-air system has a switch-over valve whereby hydraulic power can be used in the rudder actuating cylinders. The rudder 1, Fig. I, has its tiller arms 3 connected by rods 6, 6', 9, 9', with pistons in cylinders 5, 5<1>, which are supplied with air under pressure by pipes 18, 21, under control of a valve 16, through a pipe 15 from a receiver 13 fed by a compressor 12. The position of the rudder is indicated at 28 adjacent the control valve, wires 26 coupling the indicator with an arc over which moves the pointer 27 on the tiller. Should the air supply fail, a hydraulic compressor 29 is opened up to the pipe 15 and the receiver 13 shut down. The valve 16, Fig. II, has passages 16<b>, 16<c> arranged so that when the valve is moved, one pipe 18 or 21 is coupled to the supply 15, the other is coupled to an exhaust pipe 17, and in the neutral position the system and rudder is locked.
