Abstract

1489887 Femoral head prostheses ROSENTHAL TECHNIK AG 12 Nov 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 48970/74 Heading A5R A femoral head prosthesis comprises a straight cylindrical shaft 2, a flat locating flange 5 of triangular outline, viewed radially of the shaft, projecting laterally from one end of the shaft, and a neck 6 supporting a substantially spherical head 7, projecting from one edge of the flange and overhanging the flange to present a shoulder facing generally towards the other end of the shaft; the shaft, flange, neck and head all being fixed together, in use; with at least the shaft, flange and neck being formed of a ceramic material. The head may be formed integrally with the neck or may be attached by screwing-on or by cementing. The prosthesis is implanted in the femur by first piercing the cortex, forming a preliminary bore within the spongy interior of the bone with a spherically-tipped drill and subsequently enlarging this bore with a hollow twist drill which fits over the shank of the spherically-tipped drill. The cavity to receive the flange is formed by milling the femur by means of a milling cutter moving on a guide rod fitted into the bore produced by boring. The shaft and the flange may have grooves 3, 4 to assist in growing-in of bone tissue and are formed of e.g. aluminium oxide.
