Abstract

1415736 Artificial hip-joints SARATOVSKY GOSUDARSTVENNY MEDITSINSKY INSTITUT 9 May 1973 22062/73 Heading A5R An artificial hip-joint comprises an acetabulum - prosthesis 1 having a generally convex outer surface with serrations 3 into which 'bony tissue may penetrate and a generally concave inner surface 5 forming a seat for an intermediate member 13 which has a partspherical socket to receive the spherical head Y of the femur-prosthesis 2 the latter having a neck 8 connecting the head to a pin 9 insertable in the medullary canal of the femur, the mouth of the socket being constrictable, to retain the ball when inserted, by a nut 16 screwable into the acetabulum-prosthesis 1 to hold the whole assembly together. To increase flexibility, the socket-mouth is provided with slots 14 so that, in association with the nut 16, it acts as a collet. The intermediate member 13 has an apical protrusion 21 of non-circular shape, which mates with a corresponding hole 22 in the part 1, to prevent relative rotation.
