Abstract

1473190 Coating phosphated metal surfaces LUBRIZOL CORP 7 June 1974 [11 June 1973] 25392/74 Heading B2E A phosphated metal object is coated without the application of a chromium compound thereto by applying an aqueous solution of a melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin, free of solid particles, to the object and drying it. Preferably the object is phosphated steel, galvanized steel or aluminium, and the solution contains 0.05-0.75 wt % of MF resin. In Examples 1-6 solutions of 50-80% solids content are obtained by reaction of M with 3, 5, 6 or 8 mols of F in aqueous methanol or butanol, or by dissolving hexamethoxymethylmelamine in isopropanol/water, or a commercial MF resin in methanol water. These solutions are diluted for use, and the solution is preferably acidified; the coated object may be dried and cured at 150-200‹C.
