Abstract

1,221,448. Coated metal surfaces. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. 17 Oct., 1968 ![20 Oct., 1967], No. 49203/68. Heading B2E. A metal surface is coated to improve its corrosion resistance and coating property by immersing the metal in a solution of molybdic acid or salt thereof and a water-soluble organic polymer having a molecular weight greater than about 10,000 and heating the coated metal so as to form a water-insoluble film by reaction between the organic polymer and the molybdic acid or salt thereof. The metal may be steel or galvanised steel in the form of sheets or pipes. The salt may be ammonium, sodium, calcium or magnesium molybdate and the polymer may be a polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, butadiene rubber, polystyrene, polymaleate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl ether, alkyd, melamine-alkyd or melamine-formaldehyde polymers. The concentration of polymer in the solution may be from 0.05 to 45% by wt. The solution may contain a mineral acid or an organic acid and may contain 0.1 to 10% by wt. molybdic acid or salt thereof.
