1462288 Waste compactor P TASHMAN 2 July 1974 29233/74 Heading B8C [Also in Division F2] A waste compactor comprises a ram 37 which is vertically reciprocable by an electric drive to compact waste introduced from a shoot (98), Fig. 1 (not shown), and through an opening into a removable container dolly 12, a guard gate 111 which moves downwardly with the ram 37 to close the shoot opening during compaction, and a switch 123 which is sensitive to obstruction of the guard gate to cause reversal of downward ram movement. The guard gate 111 moves downwardly under the action of gravity, its movement being controlled by abutment of a member 114 carried by the gate 111 with a rocker lever 115 pivotally mounted on the ram 37. The switch 123 is operated by the rocker lever 115 to cause said reversal of the ram 37 upon the lever 115 and the member 114 becoming disengaged prior to the gate 111 reaching its full-closing position. The ram 37 is reciprocated by a screw-thread jack driven by an electric motor 58 through a series of pulleys. The jack, Fig. 5 (not shown) comprises a drive screw (48) journalled in a support plate 32 and engaged with a carrier sleeve member (67) which is secured within the upper end of a tubular rod 68. Guide lugs 71, 72 on the tubular rod 68 are engaged in slots (73, 74), Figs. 3 and 8 (not shown), is a fixed cylindrical sleeve 75 to constrain the rod 68 to vertical motion only. The compactor includes a control circuit which controls the operation of the compactor ram, prevents the operation of the compactor unless the dolly is properly positioned and indicates when the dolly is full of compacted waste.
