Refuse placed into the machine through hinged doors 46 and 74 falls into a disposable cardboard box 96 supported within a metal sleeve 78 and is compressed by the downward movement of an hydraulic ram 70. The ram is lowered by a piston and cylinder arrangement 64 on downward movement of a manual control lever 44. Subsequent raising of the lever 44 raises the ram so that the machine is ready to receive further refuse. In the lowered position of the. ram, a plate 106 is supported by stops 110 to prevent further refuse being added through the door 74. The plate 106 is raised by contact with the upper surface of the ram. The door 74 normally engages under tabs 76 on the door 46 so that the two doors move together. The sleeve has a bottom wall 84 and rests on a concrete slab 114 provided with a front roller 116 so that, after a front part 24 of the machine casing has been opened, the sleeve may be drawn forwards by means of a handle 92. Spring loaded legs 120 are lowered to support the sleeve while its front 88 is pivoted open and are then collapsed to tilt the sleeve and aid the removal of the cardboard box 96. A new box is then loaded into the machine and has at least one of its flaps held open by a spring loaded clip 98. Each time refuse isadded to the machine, an electric switch 40 has to be operated to energize the ram mechanism. The switch 40 may be in the form of a spring loaded button which has to be depressed with one hand while the other hand operates the lever 44; thus neither hand can enter the machine while the ram is moving.
