Abstract
1411359 Refuse compactors HOBART CORP 26 Sept 1972 [17 April 1972] 36648/74 Divided out of 1411289 Heading B8C A compactor, e.g. for domestic refuse, and comprising a compactor housing 10, a ram 18 mounted in said housing for vertical reciprocal movement therein, a refuse receiving-receptacle 54 and opposed drawer slides 52 supporting said receptacle for movement between a compacting position beneath the ram 18 and a non- compacting position displaced outwardly of said compacting position, is characterized in that means is provided for permitting limited movement of the receptacle 54 sufficient to relieve compacting forces from said drawer slides in response to pressure exerted on said receptacle by said ram during compacting movement thereof. As shown, the compactor 10 comprises the housing 10 with a base 14 and opposed side walls 16, the ram 18 mounted within the housing, including a motor 20 which, through a belt-andsocket mechanism 26, 28, and a chain-andsprocket drive 32, 30, drives sprockets 34 which are in engagement with stationary jack-screws 22 which move the ram upwardly and downwardly within the housing 10. The latter includes uprights 36, one at each corner, draw slides 52, which slidably support the drawer 54 for movement between a non-compacting position, Fig. 1, and a compacting position beneath the ram 18, being bolted, or welded, to a corresponding pair of carrier plates 40. Each plate 40 is slidably connected to the respective upright by nuts and bolts 42 which extend through slots 38 in the respective upright 36, a spring 38, accommodated in a slot 44 in the upright, being connected between the latter and the plate 40. When, during a downward compacting of the ram 18, the compacting force imposed on the drawer overcomes the tension of the springs 46, the draw descends a short distance to allow the drawer to bottom on the base 14 so that the compacting forces are transformed from the drawer to the base. In a modification, Figs. 4-6 not shown, each slide assembly comprises a stationary slide (62) which is fixed to a plate (64) attached to a side wall of the housing and which is associated with a movable slide (66) slidable relative thereto by means of a bearing unit (68). A projecting leg (78), at one end of a bracket (72), which is pivotally attached to the corresponding side of the drawer (54) at (76) and which is loaded by a spring (84) at its other end, upwardly against a plate (86), is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the movable guide (66). The springs (84) allow the drawer (54) to bottom on the base (14).
