Abstract

1452341 Mobile drill rig RUSTON-BUCYRUS Ltd 24 Jan 1974 [15 Feb 1973] 03301/74 Heading B3C [Also in Division E1] A mobile drill rig comprises a mast 19 pivotally connected at 15 to a frame 10 for motion between an upright drilling position, Fig. 1, and a horizontal transport position (Fig. 3. not shown) and a back brace for supporting the mast during drilling. The back brace comprises a strut 21, 23 having a knee joint 25 for use in folding the strut and a knee brace 38 pivotally connected to a point adjacent or near the foot of the mast and slidably engaged along its length with the strut (as shown at knee joint 25). A locking mechanism associated with the strut and the knee brace is operable, when the mast is raised, to fasten the strut and knee brace together thereby to lock the strut in its unfolded position. The lock mechanism shown comprises a hook-shaped end 42 on the knee brace 38, Fig. 8, which engages a projecting extension 27 of a cross member 26 between a pair of identical struts 21, 21A, 23, 23A, Fig. 2. In intermediate and lowered positions of the mast, the knee brace located by plate 28 slides on extension 27 (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The locking mechanism may be released by pneumatically operated ram 46-49, Fig. 8. The upper or as shown lower strut member 23 may be adjustably telescopic or alternatively the knee brace 38 may be adjustable in length so that the mast may also be fixed in inclined drilling positions (Fig. 9, not shown).
