Abstract

142,675. Herald, H. D. May 24, 1919. Passing fluids through materials on perforated drums.- A roller for use in openers, scutchers, and other textile machines, in which fibres, laps, threads, or fabrics are wound or wrapped upon the roller, consists of a spindle carrying a hollow perforated shell which can subsequently be removed for treatment of the wound material in drying and like machines. The spindle A, Fig. 1, carries the hollow perforated shell B which is covered with a layer of cloth or gauze C to prevent fibres from entering the perforations. The lap is formed on the sheet B, which is then removed from the spindle A, when the lap may be covered with a layer of protecting-cloth. Flanges D, D<1>, Fig. 5, are then screwed on the threads b<1> on the ends of the shell, the flanges D being closed and centrally recessed to receive a conical projection e<1> on the cover of the treating-cylinder E, while the flange D<1> is open to receive a hollow conical member e on the floor of the cylinder E, through which member e the treating-liquid is introduced or withdrawn. The cylinder E may contain any number of shells B, which may be made of glazed earthenware, ebonite, pressed fibre, impregnated asbestos, nickel or nickel alloy, phosphor-bronze, anti-acid brass or the like, or iron.
