Apparatus for making filaments.-The cakes of artificial silk &c. are washed, bleached, desulphurized, &c. and, if desired, dyed, dried and finished, while still in the spinning boxes, the latter being at rest during these treatments, the inner layers of thread being supported by perforated or permeable spools inserted into the cakes, and the liquids &c. being sucked or forced 'through the cakes. The spools used may be of a construction which permits their diameter to be varied, and in order to deal with the shrinkage of the cake that occurs during the treatments, there may be provided an elastic pad for keeping the layers of thread in place. Drying is effected by passing hot or cold air through the cakes; this may take place in the spinning boxes, but may be completed after the removal of the spools with their attached cakes from the spinning boxes, or after the thread has been transferred to another spool or reel, or has been brought into hank form. 'The cakes may be steamed while still on the spoils. As shown, a perforated spool H is inserted into the cake A which is supported in the spinning box B between washers F, J, the latter being provided to prevent flotation of the threads. The bottom of the box is perforated, and, during winding, a washer is fitted into the interior of the washer F. Piles of such boxes are supported in profiled plates fitted on the false bottom L of a vat K of rubber-coated iron, the boxes being held in position by means of a lid N provided with pressure pieces P supported by rubber washers 0 and held against the pile of boxes by means of springs Q. A pump S connected to the space below the false bottom serves for the passage of liquid, air or vapours through the cakes, and the pump may be of the reversible type so that the direction of flow may be reversed at intervals.
