Abstract

1400656 Fuel injection pumps BENDIX CORP 6 June 1973 [8 June 1972] 26948/73 Heading F1A A fuel injection pump comprises a reciprocating piston assembly 30 for pressurizing fuel in a pump chamber 10, a delivery valve assembly 50, and a solenoid operated relief valve assembly 27 which operates independently of the reciprocating piston assembly 30 and includes a valve 20 whose axial movement opens or closes a spill port 3 in the chamber 10 and whose ends terminate outside the chamber 10 so that its axial movement is not biased by pressurized fuel within the chamber 10. The spill port 3 leads to a supply chamber 5, which supplies fuel to the chamber 10 via an inlet passage 6, and communicates with the chamber 10 by means of a groove 2 in the valve 20 when the valve 20 is extended furthest away from the associated solenoid coil 24. A piston 31 of the assembly 30 only pressurizes fuel in the chamber 10 when the port 3 is closed by the valve 20 and the delivery valve 51 of the assembly 50 then opens when the pressure in the chamber 10 overcomes an associated spring 52. In use, the valve 20 reciprocates in accordance to a signal fed to the coil 24 from a sensing device (not shown), and the piston 31 is reciprocated by a spring 33 and cam follower 32 bearing against a cam of an engine (not shown).
