Abstract

1398984 Feeding webs; packages R A JONES & CO Inc 25 May 1972 [27 May 1971] 24797/72 Headings B8R and B8C A pair of alternating, reciprocating clamps 41, 42 feed a web continuously along a path 22 through a machine, e.g. a blister packaging machine, by alternately engaging the edges of the web during their forward strokes and transferring engagement back and forth between the clamps whilst they are moving forwardly at the same velocity. The packaging machine includes web heating and web forming means 31, 32, blister loading means 33 and laminating and trimming means 34, 35, the means 31, 32, 34 and 35 being mounted on heads 73, 74 vertically reciprocable towards and away from each other, so as to move the means between operative and inoperative positions, by linkages 97, 91, 105, 107 controlled by a cam 100 and torsion bars 121. Alternatively, electric, hydraulic or pneumatic motors may be used. The heads 73, 74 reciprocate upon machine head assemblies 71, 72 which have the configuration of parallelograms and are horizontally reciprocated out of phase and with an adjustable stroke via linkages 92, 93 controlled by a cam (96), Fig. 8 (not shown), coaxial with the cam 100. The clamp 41 is pivoted to the machine head assembly 72 and is slidably supported by the clamp 42 which is pivoted to the assembly 71. The clamps extend longitudinally of the web feed path 22 and each, e.g. clamp 42, includes a spring finger (65), Fig. 4 (not shown), movable into clamping engagement against a fixed finger (63) by an inflatable elastic hose (67) operable by a cam (not shown). The cams are such that the reciprocating clamps engage the web edge alternately but, due to overlap of their forward strokes, continuous web advance is achieved. The means 31, 32, 34, 35 are moved into operative positions to work on the moving web whilst moving in synchronism therewith. Lamination is effected by a roller or stamp means. The resultant packages are cut from the web and may be scored for folding.
