Abstract

Fire-bridges.-An inclined refractory baffle d, attached at the rear of a furnace grate c so as to form an extension of the surface, is provided with blocks h projecting upwardly along the back edge. The blocks are arranged in one or more transverse rows, and, in the latter case, the blocks in one row are in line with the spaces of the adjoining rows. The baffle d is carried by a plate e supported by the fire-bar support f and a bracket g. In a modification, a baffle having two or more angles of slope at different parts may be used; one having an upwardly convex curved surface is also shown. Fig. 9 is an end view of a baffle formed of self-supporting blocks connected together and to the fire-bar support by bolts m. The baffle assists combustion, and the live fuel may be pushed back on to it to allow clinker and ash to be removed.
