Abstract

Grates; fire-bridges.-In a furnace having a travelling grate, the fuel at the rear of the grate collects and is consumed in front of a watercooled chamber w, Fig. 1, arranged at the lower end of the fire-bridge b to form a passage through which clinker and ashes are discharged and cooled before 'they reach the suspended shutters c. The front w<1> of the chamber w is inclined, as shown, and the bottom may be inclined also or of any suitable shape. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the chamber w is in the form of a semi-cylindrical tank adapted to rotate on journals z which may be arranged at the rear of the tank at the point w<2> so that the depth of the ash-discharge passage may be maintained constant. The front of the chamber may be inclined, as indicated by the dotted line w<3>, and the underside may be of curved or other suitable shape.
