Abstract

1385488 Resistance furnaces L OERTLING Ltd 17 July 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 38210/71 Heading F4B [Also in Divisions H5 and G1] A thermogravimetric microbalance, Fig. 1, has its weigh pans 12, 13 suspended in furnaces 14, 15. Each furnace (Fig. 2) comprises a metal sheathed type element 18 in thermal contact with the cooled base 20 to insure quick thermal response, the cooling being produced by water flow D in side channels in a chromium-plated brass casing 16. Thermostats 22, 23 monitoring the coils and pan respectively are connected to a program unit to control the coil output. The coil may be a heat resisting steel tube 1 mm. diameter containing a nickel chromium alloy wire and magnesium oxide insulation. The thermostat 22 may be a platinum resistor or a thermocouple and the casing 16 of chromiumplated brass. The balance comprises a glass envelope 1 having dependent stems 2, 3 fitting into glass funnels 4, 5 at the top of columns 6, 7.
