Abstract
1376235 Measuring speed of an I C engine electrically ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 17 Jan 1972 [15 Jan 1971 (2)] 2059/72 Heading G1N Apparatus for monitoring the speed of an I.C. engine comprises means for producing a train of constant voltage pulses initiated by the ignition pulses, which are used to charge a capacitor to a voltage representing the engine speed, which voltage operates an alarm if the speed exceeds a predetermined value. The engine ignition system comprises a battery 37 Fig. 1 charging a capacitor 44. As shown for a 4-cylinder engine, a contact breaker 63 is opened four times per engine revolution, each opening causing a thyristor 58 to conduct, thereby discharging capacitor 44 through the primary winding 49 of the ignition coil 50, the corresponding high voltage pulse in the secondary winding 52 being fed by the rotor arm 53 sequentially to the spark-plugs 54-57. Each discharge pulse from capacitor 44 is also fed from terminal 66" or 66' via lead 17 to charge a capacitor 13 in the monitoring circuit 12 to a voltage determined by Zener diode 22 and discharging resistor 14. The average voltage across capacitor 13, determined by integrating unit 23, represents the angular speed of the engine. If this voltage exceeds a predetermined value set by resistors 29, 31 a thyristor 26 fires and energizes a buzzer 38. A negative temperature coefficient resistor 30 compensates for temperature variations. The thyristor 26 may be replaced by a Schmitt trigger circuit.
