Abstract
1328939 Measuring compression in IC engines ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 10 Aug 1972 [11 Aug 1971] 37272/ 72 Heading G1N The compression in the combustion chambers of an IC engine is determined by measuring the torque required from the engine starter motor to turn the engine over, the torque being proportional to motor current and indicated by the voltage drop across the battery terminals. As shown Fig. 2, the voltage pulses at terminal 11 of battery 10, representing the current pulses in starter motor 27, are fed through a low pass filter 12 to zero-voltage switch 15 which produces trigger pulses for a counter 17, enabling a unit 16 to store the peak values of the measured pulses. These values are fed to a recorder 18 and a comparator 19 which energizes a lamp 24 or 25 depending on the variation in peak values. The system is initially delayed for a short time by elements 4, 21, 20. In another embodiment, the starter current peak value s are compared with pre-set maximum and minimum values, which may be automatically modified in accordance with e.g. temperature.
