Abstract

869,365. Electrical measuring systems. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 20, 1958 [March 25, 1957], No. 9721/57. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XL (c)] Apparatus for measuring the speed of rotation of the shaft of an I.C. engine comprises a capacitor having a voltage limiting device connected across it, the capacitor being alternately charged through a circuit and discharged through a transistor under control of the contact breaker associated with the ignition coil. In Fig. 2, the transistor T is cut-off when the contact breaker CB is closed. This allows the capacitor C2 to charge via resistor R1, diode D4 and an instrument M until the voltage across the Zener diode Z is reached when the charge is limited by the catching diode D5. Capacitor C2 discharges through the transistor T each time the contact breaker CB opens, the instrument M being by-passed for discharge current by the diode D3. Resistors R6, R7, R8 are provided to compensate for variation in the charging current with supply voltage variation. In a simpler transistor circuit (Fig. 1, not shown), both the charge and discharge current is measured by a rectifier instrument, the Zener diode Z being connected across the collector and emitter electrodes.
