Abstract

1372590 Charging cupola furnaces E BUHRER 30 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970 11 Nov 1971] 60860/71 Heading F4B A cupola furnace having an upper charging opening 10 closed by a member 12 extending from within the furnace, is charged by a buoket 11 adapted to seat on the opening in sealing engagement, the member 12 being movable into the cupola furnace and the bucket bottom closure 37 being opened while the bucket 11 remains in sealing engagement with the opening 10. The closure member 12 is loosely seated on a pin 13 received in an oversize bore 16, Fig. 3, in a support arm 20 passing through a hole 17 in the lower part of the closure body, so that the closure 12 has sufficient freedom of movement to take up distortion or displacements. The U-shaped support arm is connected to a counter weight 22 through an air cylinder arrangement 25 so that the closure may be opened when the furnace is not in use. The weight of bucket closure 37 and its supports are sufficient to open the closure 12 when it is lowered by the charging crane, and a bucket cover 42 carried by the crane closes the bucket top as its bottom is opened. The furnace closure may be in two parts, opened by hydraulic means actuated by opening the bucket bottom, which may open in two parts. The throat 4 of the furnace is made larger than customary. The conical throat 74 of the furnace may be connected to a cylindrical upper shaft 73, Fig. 6, which is surrounded by a space 78 from which waste gas is withdrawn through a pipe 80, which has a connection 86 to the throat 74. A temperature sensor 81 actuates a water spray 82 if the temperature of the waste gases reaches a dangerous level.
