Abstract

Metal melting furnace has an upwardly opening mouth with a lid which opens and closes by swinging about a vertical axis outside the boundary of the mouth. A hood associated with the furnace has a ceiling formed with a port registering with the furnace mouth. The lid is mounted on a vertical post defining the axis; and a cover for the port is mounted on the post for upward movement as the post is projected axially upwards and for swinging movement about the axis with the post and the lid. When the hood cover and furnace lid are removed whilst a charging bucket is lowered into registry with the furnace mouth, hot furnace gases are vented through the hood and can be treated to prevent pollution of the immediate environment.
