Abstract
1371220 Compressed air starting of internal combustion engines SOC D'ETUDES DE MACHINES THERMIQUES 30 Nov 1971 55423/71 Heading F1K A starting distributor 1 is mounted on the frame or crank-case 2 of a diesel engine, for example a six cylinder engine, and is arranged coaxially with the engine cam-shaft. The camshaft has an extension 7 for driving auxiliaries. The end of the shaft 7 is connected by a coupling 8 to a drive shaft 9 in the distributor 1. As the outer diameter of the distributor disc 16 is greater than the outer diameter of the cylindrical portion 20,of the rotor, the compressed air which enters through the opening 24 tends to push the disc 16 against the body 3. To reduce friction the face 17 of the disc 16 can be lined with a material having a low friction coefficient. When the disc 16 is in the position shown in Fig. 1 the opening 38 is in register with an opening 32 in the body 3 so that the compressed air arriving through the annular space 23 in the housing 13 passes through the latter and the passage 30 and the opening 31 to feed one engine cylinder. The other cylinders are exhausted through the other openings 31 and passages 30 whose openings 32 are in register with the groove 41. The recesses 42 are in register with the circular exhaust channel 44 of the body 3. In a modification (not shown) the air inlet is coaxial with the distributor shaft.
