Abstract
1361983 Explosive charges; detonators DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 26 July 1971 [24 July 1970 6 Aug 1970] 35043/71 Heading F3A An explosive charge having an improved brisance comprises a solid body of explosive material with at least one passage extending therethrough for the throughflow of combustion gases when detonated at one position, which body is adapted to produce, as a result of said throughflow, a shock wave or detonation front which emanates from each of a plurality of positions in the passage and travels towards a position on the periphery of the body which it reaches before a detonation front travelling from said one position in the direction of the passage, the velocity of the detonation front being less than the velocity of the combustion gases. The detonation fronts or shock waves emanating from each of the plurality of positions are created respectively, by blocking the passage 3, Fig. 5, in the charge 1 with plugs 4 of inert or explosive material, or by leading the combustion gases directly to the periphery of the charge through lined, or unlined, cavities 1, 3, Fig. 8. The charges are ignitable by detonators 5 and may be surrounded by casings 12 which are burst into splinters of a length determined by said plurality of positions. The charge can be used as a detonator if inserted in a bore in a charge of larger diameter. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the charge is in the form of concentric charges with an annular passage therebetween or is in the form of a sphere (not shown) with a plurality of radial passages emanating from a central ignition point.
