Abstract

1352119 Steering wheels CLIFFORD COVERING CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [8 Dec 1969] 59723/69 Heading B7J An impact load absorbing steering wheel comprises a rim 11, Fig. 1, connected to a hub 10 by a plurality of zig-zag spokes 12 each having straight portions 13 and 14, parallel to the median plane of the rim, and an intermediate straight portion 15, the portions 13, 14 and 15 are inclined in opposite directions, as shown, to the expected direction of impact A when the wheel is in use in a vehicle. A covering 16, Fig. 2, of generally channel-shaped cross-section covers and is detachably secured to the spokes so as to become detached from the spokes on impact thus allowing the spokes to deform in a strictly predetermined manner without interference from the covering. The connection between the spokes and the covering may be in the form of an easily rupturable membrane of covering material 17 or a snap-action connection.
