Abstract

1446698 Steering wheels BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 23 May 1975 [8 May 1974] 20263/74 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] A steering wheel for a motor vehicle comprises a rim 2 and a hub 1 interconnected by a spoke or spokes 3 inclined in one direction from the medial plane of the rim 2, at least one end of the or each spoke 3 being secured by a rupturable connection within a respective sleeve 4 having a blind end and secured either to the rim 2 or the hub 1, for telescoping therein against a mechanical resistance which is afforded, at least in part, by the rupturable connection or connection, after breaking away. The rupturable parts are formed by crimping the sleeve at 5 into the spoke 3 at 6 in two longitudinally spaced pairs of diametrically opposed crimps. The sleeve and the spoke are fixedly secured to the rim and hub. In an alternative form the sleeve 4 and spoke are pivotally connected to the rim and hub. According to a further form the spoke is pivoted to the hub and is secured against sliding in the sleeve, which is pivoted to the rim, by one or more shear pins extending through the sleeve and spoke. A rubber sleeve is disposed in the sleeve 4 between the end of the spoke and a blind end of the sleeve.
