Abstract

1347270 Laminates AMERICAN OYANAMID CO 17 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970 29 Dec 1970] 58798/71 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C3 and E1] A sound absorbing laminate comprises (a) a core section 3 0À125-12À0 inches thick comprising a plurality of linearly corrugated flat metal or plastics sheets 0À001-0À006 inch thick joined together at all contacting surfaces in face-to-face relation, the corrugations of alternate sheets being angularly inclined and opposed to cross those of adjacent sheets to form a rigid trusslike structure in which adjacent channels are interconnected, the corrugations of the sheets having a height of 1/16-3/16 inch and #-¢ inch centres, and the longitudinal axes of all the linear corrugations of the sheets being disposed obliquely to the longitudinal plane of the laminate, (b) a solid metal or plastics skin 6 of 1- 250 mils thickness joined to one face of the core and (c) a perforated metal or plastics skin 4 of 1-250 mils thickness having an open area of 5-60%, the perforations 5 being 0À010-0À50 inch in size at their shortest diameter, joined to the opposite face of the core. Numerous examples of suitable metal and plastics materials including phenolic or polyimide resin impregnated kraft paper or cloth, for the core and skins are given. The perforations and channels may be filled with an air-permeable, acoustically active material, e.g. glass wool or foamed rubber. The perforated layer may be flat, striated, dimpled or otherwise treated by cutting, pressing or embossing to improve the appearance thereof and the perforations may be circular, square, slot-shaped, oval, rectangular, diamond, star or random shaped. The skins may be bonded to the core by means of an adhesive comprising (a) a polyurethane prepolymer, (b) 45-99% of the stoichiometric equivalent based on the free-NCO content of (a) of a diamine curing agent, (c) 1-55% of the stoichiometric equivalent based on the free-NCO content of (a) of a tri-functional alcohol amine and (d) 0À1-15% by weight based on the total weight of the composition of a glycidoxyalkyl trialkoxy silane. The components of the laminate may be pressed together and the adhesive cured optionally at an elevated temperature. In Examples (1) and (2) a perforated aluminium sheet and a solid aluminium sheet are bonded to a core of metal sheets with an adhesive composition comprising γ-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxy silane, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene bis-2-o-chloroaniline, triisopropanol amine and a polyester based polyurethane prepolymer, or with a polyimide adhesive, (3) a solid aluminium sheet and a perforated sheet of polyvinylchloride are bonded to a core, (4) a core of aluminium foil is bonded to a solid sheet of aluminized cold rolled steel and a perforated sheet of mild steel, (5) a core of phenolic resin impregnated kraft paper is bonded to perforated and solid sheets of polyethylene terephthalate and (6) a core is bonded to perforated and solid sheets of transparent acrylic polymer.
