1312819 Fishing reels ETABS CARPANA & PONS 22 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 35475/70 Heading A1A [Also in Division F2] A releasable pawl and ratchet device which may be incorporated in a fishing reel comprises pawl 1, coaxially mounted on a shaft 2a of a control button 2 and blade spring 3 which selectively urges the pawl 1 either towards an operative position in which the pawl 1 is in a pawl 1, coaxially mounted on a shaft 2a of a engagement with a ratchet 6a or an inoperative position in which the pawl 1 is spaced from the ratchet 6a. There being sufficient angular play α, between the pawl 1 and the shaft 2a to accommodate angular movement α, of the pawl 1 and the shaft 2a to accommodate angular movement α, of the pawl 1 caused by rotation of the ratchet 6a when the pawl 1 is in its operative position. The blade spring 3 is bowed between a notch 1a in the pawl 1 and a notch 9a in a stud 9 on a housing 5 and in moving the pawl 1 from its inoperative to its operative position the spring 3 passes through an unstable equilibrium position. In its inoperative position (Fig. 7) the pawl 1 abuts against a stop 7 on the housing 5 but counterclockwise rotation of the button 2 causes engagement of surface 2f of the button 2 and surface 1b of the pawl 1 to move the pawl 1 into its operative position (Fig. 1). Counterclockwise rotation of the ratchet 6a is permitted by virtue of the anguar play α, between the button 2 and the pawl 1 (Fig. 9) and clockwise rotation of the ratchet 6a causes movement of the pawl 1 to take up play 11 between the pawl 1 and the button 2 and to cause abutment of the pawl 1 with a face 8a of a projection 8 on the housing 5 (Fig. 10). The ratchet 6a is released by counterclockwise rotation of the pawl 1. The direction of rotation of the ratchet 6a when the pawl 1 is operating may be reversed, an alternative stop 7a and a stud 10 being provided on opposite sides of the button 2 to the stop 7 and the stud 9. An elastic washer 4 takes up play in the mounting of button 2 and the pawl 1 is held on button 2 by a washer 6 removably fixed to the ratchet 6a.
