An automatic hand towel machine includes a measuring roller 1 over which the towel strip is drawn from a supply roll 2, a pressure roller 3, a drive roller 5 coupled by a chain (not shown) to roller 1 and driving a roll 6 to wind on the used towel, a clockwork spring in a housing 11 rotatably mounted on a spindle 9 the spring end being secured to the spindle and housing a spring tensioning device comprising a toothed wheel 13 on spindle 9, pivotable locking pawls 14, 15 and a lever 8 moved by an eccentric disc 7 on the shaft of the measuring roller 1 and pivotally mounted on spindle 9, a locking lever 17 pivotable about a pin 17a and a pivoted flap 18 resting on the hand towel to act as a detector of the passage of the end of the towel and release the locking means so that the spring can operate the drive roll and withdraw the end of the towel into the machine. As the towel end passes flap 18 projections on the latter can fall into slots in roller 3 so that a pin 20 on flap 18 moves a lever 21 which moves locking lever 17 to allow the spring to turn housing 11 and hence drive roller 5 through toothed wheels 13, 27 to wind the end of the towel on to roll 6. In a modification, Fig. 4, a tongue 41 carried by a spindle 40 rests on the towel and the spindle also carries a lever arm 42 having a permanent magnet 43 movably mounted on its end, this magnet being at a relatively large distance from an armature 39 on a lever 35 which holds a locking lever 33 in locking position so that when the towel has run over pressure roller 3 the tongue 41 falls into a slot in the roller moving magnet 43 closer to the armature 39 to attract it with greater force and thus move the levers to release the clockwork spring.
