Abstract
1282208 Ball-point pen inks ANANDA ANLAGEANSTALT 21 April 1970 [23 April 1969] 18940/70 Heading C4A [Also in Division B6] An ink filling for a ball-point pen comprises a dyestuff, a thickener, and a solvent which vaporizes progressively at room temperature; has a viscosity when mixed with a solvent which vaporizes almost immediately at room temperature, of at least 20,000 cp., and on evaporation thereof, of at least 70,000 cp.; and is urged towards the ball-point by the pressure of a gas produced in the free space between the end of the ink column and the plug closing the ink tube by the interaction of at least two reagents, at least one reagent comprising a highly viscous liquid or paste and an active substance, and at least one other reagent including a further substance reactive to generate a gas, the volume of free space being at least 1/5 of that of the ink, and the pressure generated by the reagents being 0À7- 7 atm. gauge initially, falling to 0À1-3 atm. gauge when the ink is exhausted. The highly volatile solvent may be diethyl ether, acetone, methyl, ethyl or isopropyl acetate, methanol, isopropanol, decalin, xylol, chloroform, dichloromethane or trichloroethylene, and the less volatile solvent benzyl alcohol or a glycol. The ink thickener may be polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethylene glycol wax, linseed oil of a high thickening grade, or a dispersion of silica, graphite or carbon black. The gasproducing reagents may be aqueous NaHCO 3 and aqueous acetic acid, each in a fat, wax, silica gel, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and/or polyethylene glycol supporting medium. In Examples 1 and 2 the ink also includes oleic acid.
