Abstract
1,003,653. Reservoir pens. DOLEO S.A. April 16, 1964 [May 3, 1963], No. 15879/64. Heading B6P. In a ballpoint pen of the type wherein the ink is fed to the ball under the action of a mass of compressed gas produced inside the reservoir through reaction between two chemically active components, a hollow, triangular crosssection member 6, Fig. 3, is press fitted into the reservoir to define channels 7 and 8, Fig. 4. One chemically reactive component 9 fills the channel 8, and the other component 10 fills the channels 7. A plug of neutral pasty substance 11 prevents the components 9 and 10 from reacting chemically. A diaphragm 12 with an orifice defines a mixing chamber 16 below the member 6. A plug 17 at the top of reservoir traps air under pressure in the space 20. When the ink is used, the level in the reservoir drops. The pressure of the air in the space 20 forces the two chemical components 9 and 10 down their respective channels so that they chemically react in the chamber 16 to form a gas 21. When sufficient gas has been produced and the pressure of the gas balances the pressure of the air in the space 20, equilibrium is achieved until the level of the ink 3 again drops. The pasty plug 11 moves down the channel 8 as the chemical component 9 is used, thereby maintaining a barrier between the two components 9 and 10. Various types of member 6 are described, Figs. 5 to 17 (not shown), all defining at least two channels for the two chemically reactive components 9 and 10. One example of the chemical component 10 is: A polyamide resin is a Versamide diluted in a proportion as of 1/ 3 in a solvent such as benzyl alcohol. A method of manufacturing the ball point pen comprises the following steps: (2) Ink is injected at the writing end into the reservoir 1 and the terminal portion 4 inserted. (2) The diaphragm 12 is fitted inside the rear end of the reservoir 1 and urged forward by a hollow piston 29, Fig. 20. (3) The tubular member 6 previously loaded with a predetermined amount of the active substance 9 and the plug 11 from injectors 35 and 36 respectively, is urged from a rotary support 32, Fig. 21, into the rear end of the reservoir 1 by an axially moving punch 38. (4) The second active substance 10 is introduced into the rear section of the reservoir 1 by an injector system, Fig. 23. (5) The reservoir is closed with the rubber plug 17 together with a predetermined amount of sealing paste 53 by apparatus illustrated in Fig. 24. (6) The reservoir 1 is finally sealed with the knurling wheel 49 and rollers 52 as shown in Fig. 25.
